The Abbey Museum
Competitions
The San Galgano Abbey Museum is located in ZONE l. inside the pre-existing structure, with the ultimate goal of reviving these spaces through a contemporary technique that fuses antiquity with the present. The proposal consists of the integration of a roof system that surrounds the abbey with the intention of perpetuating a message of innovation and renewal. The structure covers the entire central nave and the transept, with the traditional Latin cross shape. The aim is to maintain the active correlation of the interior space with the sky, with the use of a translucent material. which will maintain the magical glow of the stone when hit by sunlight. The central nave, as an empty space, with the most distinguishable presence of the highest height reached, has the sole purpose of making the pre-existing structure the main exhibition material of the museum, where visitors must pass through this central space, contemplating the presence of the respectful infusion of old and new structure. The exhibition spaces are located in the side hallways. These spaces are independent closed areas, which allows temperature control for the benefit of the exhibition material.
